I am a landscape artist based in West Sussex. I recently graduated from the University of Chichester with a BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art and will be completing my MFA at West Dean College in July, 2026.
My style is gestural and spontaneous with loose strokes creating a sense of movement and atmosphere. I am interested in the contrasting scattered patterns made by sunlight and shadows and exaggerate the fleeting shapes that mark the passing of time. My works are my personal response to my surroundings, not in grand places but in the every-day as part of a process of quiet noticing. I work in charcoal, acrylics and oil on linen, birch board and Khadi paper.
The past two years have been spent in the inspiring grounds of West Dean College where I am completing an MFA, responding to areas such as the looming redwoods of St.Roche's Arboretum. My exhibition at the West Dean Summer Show will be a culmination of these experiences in nature, conveying a sensation not only of the 'green and pleasant' aspect of the landscape, but also hinting at the eerier side of the English countryside. With atmospheric monochrome drawings, I aim to create an otherworldly, haunted space that is unsettling and disquieting. This strategy of using charcoal to blur and obscure, creates an estrangement to nature which asks questions about the past, present and future of the landscape. By making nature strange in this way, I hope to draw attention to our relationship with the natural world at a time when it is at its most exploited and damaged.
